Huawei-3Com has recently helped the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Hong Kong's leading E&M service organization, to construct a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10G) next-generation network with intelligent resilient framework technology (IRF). EMSD has invested in this high-performance network to support e-government initiatives and growth in its IT services business.

EMSD provides electrical, mechanical, electronic engineering and building services for government departments and public institutions in Hong Kong, and provides a regulatory framework to ensure the safety of the public in a number of electrical, mechanical and gas engineering areas.

EMSD required a 10G network from core to edge, to enable the department to operate as a 24-hour centralized data network connecting up to 100 other remote sites. 10 Gigabit Ethernet is currently the fastest networking speed in the market. The network has " gone live " in EMSD's new eight -floor, 98,000 sqm office space in Kowloon Bay and will enable Voice over IP and multimedia applications such as video conferencing and web casting. It will also allow for the expected increase in data, voice and video traffic over EMSD's network in coming years as the organization boosts its provision of IT services for other government departments.
